Valls Calçotada Festival 2018: a record-breaking year

The 37th Gran Festa de la Calçotada took place on 28 January 2018. The weekend combined food, traditional culture and tastings, and became especially memorable for a record in the calçot-eating contest.

Calçotada also entered creative cuisine

The City Council announced activities for Saturday and Sunday. The Mostra de Cuina del Calçot was set up in the Pati, with small preparations accompanied by vermouth and DO Tarragona wines. On Saturday, children's events, circus and music were scheduled; The Capella de Sant Roc hosted the Calçot R+D session, dedicated to gastronomic experimentation.

Among the novelties was the presentation of the 4 Calçots wine from the Valls Agricultural Cooperative. On Sunday, the Plaça del Oli once again hosted the cooking and the Plaça del Blat the sauce and grower competitions. These spaces show the combination of popular cuisine, agricultural products and commercial activity that characterized the festival.

310 calçots: an extraordinary day in the Pati

Adrià Wegrzyn won after eating 310 calçots in 45 minutes. The ACN chronicle described the mark as a record and the official archive specifies a weight of 5,825 grams. Second place went to his father, Constantino Wegrzyn. To size the milestone, it is advisable to keep the two measurements together: the number of pieces and the recorded weight.

Information published after the festival placed attendance at up to 40,000 people. They are estimates of that day. The record explains a good part of its media memory, although the programme offered many other reasons to walk through Valls: cooking, tastings, markets and proposals around calçot cuisine.

A year to compare programmes and results

The archive allows you to separate the announced programme from the result that came later. The gastronomic session on Saturday and the demonstrations on Sunday belong to the call; Wegrzyn's mark is part of the chronicle. We preserve both perspectives so that consulting 2018 provides something more than a date or a photograph. The following schedules are historical.
