The 2017 edition
- Date: 29 Jan 2017
- Location: Valls (Tarragona)
- Edition: 36th Gran Festa de la Calçotada
Thirty years recognizing growers
The 2017 brochure highlighted the thirtieth anniversary of the Calçot de Valls IGP growers competition. Along with the bunches presented in the competition, the programme incorporated the sale of Joc de la Calçotada and announced demonstrations of sauce for people with celiac disease and those with intolerance to nuts.
The Mostra de Cuina del Calçot occupied the Pati during the weekend. The traditional dances had the Ball Pla of Vilafranca del Penedès as a guest. These are details that distinguish this edition within a programme that preserved the usual cooking, tasting and competitions.

David Adelantado won the calçots eating contest
ACN reported David Adelantado's victory with 295 calçots weighing 2.520 kilos. Around twenty people took part in the 45-minute contest in El Pati. Published estimates put overall festival attendance between 35,000 and 40,000 visitors.
The story of the day also focused on the growers. The cook Ada Parellada participated in its jury, which assessed the quality and regularity of the bunches. Thus, along with the spectacle of the eating contest, the festival offered an opportunity to observe the results of agricultural work and the differences between the items presented.

The journey of a morning of festival
The municipal agenda placed the cooking demonstrations in the Plaça de l'Oli and the dances between the Plaça del Blat and the Pati. Then came the festive elements and the calçot eating contest. The route brought together activities that could be seen in very different ways: stopping in front of a grill, following a dance or waiting for the result of a competition.
This summary preserves a selection of the programme; The linked brochure allows you to consult the complete document. The food conditions announced in 2017 are historical information, not a guarantee about sauces or stands from other editions.
