Calçotada de Valls Festival 2011: programme and video from the archive

The Gran Festa de la Calçotada of 2011 was celebrated on Sunday, January 23. It was brought forward a week so as not to coincide with the Festes Decennals de la Mare de Déu de la Candela, which Valls celebrated from January 28 to February 6.

The 2011 edition

  • Date: 23 Jan 2011
  • Location: Valls (Tarragona)

A morning between sauce, grills and popular culture

The programme spread activities across Plaça del Blat, Plaça de l'Oli and El Pati: grower and sauce competitions, cooking demonstrations and sardana dancing accompanied by Cobla Ciutat de Reus. The parade left Passeig dels Caputxins and passed through the centre before the traditional figures gathered again.

The public tasting took place in Plaça de l'Oli and Plaça de la Zeta. Both Xiquets de Valls human-tower groups were announced at the eating contest, bringing the town's casteller tradition into the food festival.

Calsotada.com's own memory

The day before, January 22, this website published an invitation to the festival. The author explained that he would attend to enjoy it, although his 2011 production of calçots had already been sold for almost a month. It is a concrete testimony of the activity itself, which should not be interpreted as a general lack of calçots in Valls.

On January 24, a second entry appeared with a video of the celebration and a photograph. Both publications are preserved in the archive: the first reflects the excitement prior to the day; The second allows us to return to the look with which this website shared it later.

The result preserved in the winners' archive

Adrià Wegrzyn won with 265 calçots and 3,560 grams. This record completes the programme and one's own memories with information about the competition. The weight and units are kept together to allow a faithful reading of the historical result.
