Calçotada Wars and a city of markets

The brochure announced the presentation of Calçotada Wars at the Pati, with tables to try the game. Catalan Games' proposal transferred the universe of calçots to the board. The weekend also included food and crafts, antique shops, restaurateurs and a Citroën 2CV rally.

Sunday morning began with cooking demonstrations in Plaça de l'Oli. The grower and sauce competitions took place in Plaça del Blat, while a parade brought together traditional festival figures and the eating contest occupied El Pati. The Societat Agrícola displayed growing machinery, linking the food to the farming behind it.

Josep Maria Godia took over

Josep Maria Godia, from Lleida, won the calçots eating contest. Nació stated that it was his second participation and that he consumed 115 pieces. The organisation's results table specifies the weight of 2,250 grams. 16 people participated in the test, according to the chronicle of that day.

Adrià Wegrzyn, champion of the previous year, did not compete due to the rule that prevented the winner from participating in the following edition. Yes, he was present to encourage his father. At the beginning, the two local groups raised pillars of five in the El Pati. The chronicle estimated the overall attendance of the festival at around 40,000 visitors, as estimated by the organisation.

What the 2015 edition contributes to the archive

The programme brings together two facets that help explain the continuity of the festival: activities linked to cultivation and new ways of sharing tradition, such as games. It also allows us to follow the evolution of a contest whose outcome changed when the participants alternated. Comparing 2014, 2015 and 2016 shows this change without reducing the Gran Festa solely to its records.
