Valls calçots competition 2026: Xavier Currius wins with almost four kilos

The Valls calçot-eating contest crowned a new champion on 25 January 2026. Xavier Currius came first with 109 calçots weighing 3,970 grams. The figures reveal something interesting: among the top three, the winner did not eat the largest number of calçots.

A champion of Santa Eugènia de Berga

El 9 Nou identified the winner as Xavier Currius, from Santa Eugènia de Berga. This was his second appearance, after finishing fifth in 2024. In 2026 he won the 40th contest, held during the 44th Gran Festa de la Calçotada.

The top three in the 2026 results

The organisers' results, also reported by Salses Fruits, list the podium as follows: Xavier Currius, 109 calçots and 3,970 grams; Alejandro Alarcón of Castelldefels, 127 calçots and 3,580 grams; and Gerald Krüger of Germany, 106 calçots and 3,290 grams.

All three weighed more than three kilos. Between the first and the second there was 390 grams of difference, although Alarcón counted 18 more pieces. It is a calculation based on published results: it shows concretely why the grams and the number of calçots should appear in separate columns.

The competition within a day of calçotada

One sponsor's report described more than 60,000 calçots prepared for the public tasting and contest, with nearly 4,000 tasting portions served. These figures belong to that 2026 report; they do not refer exclusively to the competitors.

The contest attracts plenty of cameras, but it is part of a wider food festival, with cooking demonstrations, a market and shared meals.

What does this chronicle preserve and where to continue

This page preserves the 2026 result. To retrace that Sunday's activities, see the annual programme page; to compare the winning performance with other years, explore the contest's winners' archive.

Old programmes are documents of their time. Their places, times and registrations should not be used as a call for a future edition. Our festival page links to the information for each year so that the archive continues to grow without confusing the past with the next event.
